Italians battle it out with oranges

February 4, 2008 | By More

Carnival season is celebrated in a northern Italian town by locals pelting each other with oranges. Every year around 500 tonnes of the citrus fruit are shipped in from Sicily to re-enact a battle that took place in the middle ages. The battle recalls the insurrection against a mean tyrant with the oranges representing the oppressor’s head.
